Members of the New York Chapter of the Adirondack Mountain Club are drawn from the greater New York and New Jersey Metropolitan area and enjoy the benefits of the outdoors a short distance from Manhattan in Harriman State Park.
Nawakwa is nestled on the shores of Lake Sebago, the largest lake in Harriman State Park. The rustic main cabin can accommodate 50 people for meals and social activities; in addition, there are 6 sleeping cabins with comfortable beds and numerous tent sites. A large swim dock, swimming area, and floating platform make for great swimming in Lake Sebago. Members have access to a boating fleet which includes kayaks, canoes, two rowboats, and a sailboat.
On any given weekend members of the chapter have a range of activities to choose from, including easy to challenging hikes, swimming, and boating. Meals are planned by the host or hostess from Saturday dinner through Sunday lunch for those who register for weekends scheduled in the Trail Marker, the New York Chapter’s newsletter. Chores and costs are shared by those attending.

New York’s Rustic Retreat
Since it was built in 1926, Camp Nawakwa has been open all year and has been run solely by members of the New York Chapter of the Adirondack Mountain Club. The Adirondack Mountain Club’s New York Chapter was founded in 1922 to bring together outdoor enthusiasts concerned with conservation and preservation of our wilderness, particularly the mountains, lakes, trails, and camping areas of Harriman Park and the Adirondack Mountain region. The New York Chapter of the ADK participates in hikes, conservation projects, litter cleanup drives, trail maintenance, ecological and educational activities in the local area, and upstate New York.
