What to Expect

Weekends at Camp Nawakwa are the perfect antidote to the stress of a week or a frenzied urban lifestyle. Since the Camp is only an hour’s drive from Manhattan, even getting there is hassle-free; it is also easily accessible by Port Authority bus as well as train from Hoboken or Penn Station and a moderate hike in. Taxis from local towns are also usually available if reserved in advance. (see Directions).

From March through October, one (or more) members volunteer to plan and host each weekend. The host sets the menu (happy hour and dinner on Saturday, breakfast and a trail lunch on Sunday) and buys the food. The cost is pro-rated among the people attending. Everyone is assigned a job for the weekend-from meal preparation, table setup, kitchen cleanup, cabin cleanup, etc.-so the work is shared. The cost per person for overnight accommodation and three meals is typically between $30 and $40.

The main cabin is a focal point for weekend social activity. It can accommodate up to 50 people for sit-down meals, and the large kitchen is suitably equipped for that number. A huge fireplace in the main room adds charm and warmth in cool weather. The front terrace overlooking the lake is a popular gathering place during the day, before and after meals. (See Photos).
